One of the oldest known ghost stories in America, the tale of the Blue Dog of Port Tobacco heralds from the days before the Revolutionary War. It is said that some foolish young soldier made the mistake of telling a fellow soldier of a vast fortune he’d hidden near a boulder on his property before being sent away to fight for the Crown. Some time later after returning home, his fellow soldier came to hunt this treasure and found the unwise lad patrolling the property with his faithful blue-tick hound. A fight ensued and the lad and his dog were slain, whereupon the villain fled from what he’d done. Later still, emboldened once again, he returned to the scene to resume his search — only to be met by the ghost of the blue dog, still enraged over his master’s murder. The dog chased him to his home, where he died of fright.
