Deep in the mountains of Western Maryland dwells a werewolf-like creature known as the dwayyo, or dewayo. He is said to appear as an enormous, shaggy bipedal creature with the features of a ferocious wolf, and is supposedly the enemy of the dreaded snallygaster. When approached by humans, however, he is said to retreat with a horrific scream. It’s quite possible that the dwayyo is also the hexenwulf of German folklore who immigrated to the Appalachians along with the Germans who settled in the region generations ago.
