It has tragically always been a risk for a woman to travel alone, but one doing so during the height of the witch hunt era faced a particular sort of danger, as Mary Lee discovered on her voyage to Maryland nearly four hundred years ago. Court records of her voyage tell of how, while anchored in the Chesapeake Bay awaiting morning to pull into port, the sailors of her transport ship accused her of witchcraft and demanded she be punished. The captain refused, dismissing such a barbaric belief. But as he lay sleeping later that night, the undeterred sailors captured Mary and lynched her from the mast, making her the first victim of witch hunts in Maryland. Now they she haunts the Bay, defending other women from similar fates.
