A long, long time ago there lived a little old woman on the outskirts of Leonardtown, Maryland, a widow who survived by gathering and selling herbs. One winter, tragedy after tragedy struck the small town, with blizzards and illnesses endangering the frightened residents. Seeking someone to blame, the townsfolk accused Moll Dyer of witchcraft, and she fled into the night with only the shawl nearest the door for warmth as the townsfolk burned her home. She ran until she could run no further, until she collapsed on a rock and with her dying breath cursed the town, saying “If it be a witch ye want, then it is a witch ye shall receive!”
